Story Behind The Song: A People of Peace

This song was written on the Samuel & Elizabeth Mumma farm that unexpectedly became the center of the battle of Antietam near Sharpsburg Maryland in the conflict between our United States of America. When I learned of the sacrifice and courage the Mumma family modeled before, during and after the war I was inspired to write this song in Honor of them.

The Mumma’s were part of the German Baptist Brethren “Dunker” community and known for their pacifist convictions. These peace loving people had spoken out against violence and war for generations. I find the irony of “A People of Peace – Caught in a War” to be a lot to process and wrestle with.

Their home and barns were burnt during the conflict. Mr. & Mrs. Mumma and ten children left the farm with only the clothes they were wearing and the communion of being together as a family.

In keeping with their core values and strong work ethic they rebuilt their home, barns and lives with the help of family, friends and community. In doing so, they helped heal the wounds of war and redeem an overwhelming tragedy they played no role in creating.

Long live the legacy of “Simple People with Honest Dreams”

PEOPLE OF PEACE

Simple people with honest dreams
A quiet life on meager means
A good night’s sleep after a long day
Early to rise for a time to pray

These are beautiful people
With a heart to serve & an open door
Living church without a steeple
A People of peace – caught in a war

They did not seek this the battle came to them
10,000 soldiers & an’ angels friend
Their house and barn went up in flames
Crops were gone family remained
